When we refer to players equipped for changing a game, you’d take a look at Chelsea’s squad and the likes of Eden Hazard, Cesc Fàbregas, Oscar dos Santos and Diego Costa would be the first names to spring to mind.

But nonetheless, the pensioners biggest game changer could be the club’s only World Cup hero, German winner André Schürrle.

Despite being on the fringes of both Chelsea’s and the Germany international set up last season, his contribution to the German Eagles was crucial to their World Cup success.

With several memorable performers at this year’s World Cup, Schürrle’s contributions were overlooked.  The midfielder was instrumental in turning games in the Germans’ favour – games that appeared to be heading towards stalemate.

Utilised as an impact substitute by coach Joachim Löw, Schürrle managed three goals and three assists in six appearances. His most important contribution was setting up Mario Götzes’ winner in the final against Argentina.

You could argue that Schürrle was the difference between the Germans winning the tournament and coming home early.

Blues fans only saw glimpses of their German prospect in Chelsea colours last season as the former Bayern Leverkusen man was adjusting to the English game.

Now settled in, the 23-year-old looks better equipped to play an instrumental role in Jose Mourinho’s quest to bring the Premier League trophy back to Stamford Bridge.

Unlike Chelsea’s other midfield options, Schürrle offers a plan B. His energy and direct style of play could aid Chelsea to prevail against defensive teams, the same teams that derailed Chelsea last season.

Whether Mourinho decides to start the German or deploy him similarly to Löw, Schürrle could prove to be Chelsea’s secret weapon.
