Press Room: Van Gaal unhappy with 3-1 win over Burnley

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was displeased with his side’s 3-1 win over Burnley on Wednesday evening, saying he has seen little progression.

The Red Devils ensured victory over Sean Dyche’s side thanks to a double from Chris Smalling and a penalty from Robin van Persie but they were tested by the likes of Danny Ings, who did score a consolation goal for the visitors.

Van Gaal told BBC Sport: “I didn’t like this performance today. Of course, we have won and the result is fantastic. But after this match you cannot say that we are going up and I want to progress every match.”

Both Daley Blind and Phil Jones had to be hauled off through injury and the 63-year-old boss has conceded that he has concerns about their fitness.

He added: “Daley Blind has a headache and maybe tomorrow it is better. I don’t think Blind will be out for next Monday’s game. But for Phil Jones, I fear. I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Dyche claimed that he was pleased with the display from his side, but conceded that his players need to secure points.

“This game does kick you in the rear sometimes, and that’s what it did tonight,” the Burnley boss told reporters. “I thought we were outstanding for most of the game, the first half particularly.

“I think everyone in the stadium was amazed that they came out of the first half 2-1 up after the chances we created, the quality of chances we created, the quality of our football and our goal.

“But we’re getting hurt for the details at the moment and it’s happened to us a few times this season. That’s the growth we need in these players – to smell danger at this level, because games can turn quickly and they can turn almost on nothing.”
