Smalling double helps Man United beat Burnley

A double from Chris Smalling helped Manchester United as they beat Burnley 3-1 at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal had injury problems in the opening minutes of the game and was forced to replace Phil Jones with Chris Smalling early on and the centre-back made a huge difference.

Radamel Falcao flicked on a corner kick into the path of Smalling just moments after his introduction and he beat Tom Heaton from close range.

However, Burnley would get themselves back into the game thanks to the prolific finishing of Danny Ings, who headed in a Kieran Trippier cross.

United were then forced to replace Daley Blind through injury but they would head into the half time break leading thanks to Smalling once more, who headed in another set piece.

The second half saw Burnley push for a leveller but the points were sealed for the hosts when Angel di Maria was hauled down in the box for Robin van Persie to tuck the spot kick away.
