Scholes criticises ‘bizarre’ Van Gaal

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has hit out at the “bizarre” reaction from Louis van Gaal in response West Ham boss Sam Allardyce’s long ball claims.

Following the 1-1 draw between the two sides on Sunday at Upton Park, Allardyce labelled United as a ‘long ball’ side, which infuriated the Dutch coach, who then produced a dossier of tactics, stats and figures in his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s match with Burnley.

Scholes, who won the Premier League 11 times at Old Trafford has now had his say on the matter and said that the former Netherlands boss should not have reacted to Allardyce.

“Why would you react to a West Ham manager? It’s different if it’s a rival manager like Chelsea or Manchester City’s, but, at the end of the day, you’re the Manchester United manager,” he told BT Sport.

“I found it all bizarre, to be honest with you, as I felt Allardyce’s comments were light-hearted in the first place.”
