Messi to discuss future with Manchester United target

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is hoping to tempt the club and close friend Dani Alves into remaining at the Camp Nou.

Argentine forward Messi holds a close bond with Brazilian full-back Alves, having spent a number of years occupying the right side of Barcelona’s starting eleven and they have once again been reuinited in that role under Luis Enrique this season.

Alves, who will see his current contract with Barca expire in June has been linked with a summer exit, prompting the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Arsenal and Manchester United to show interest.

The latter are favourites to agree a deal with boss Louis van Gaal ready to offer a £100,000 per week contract to the former Sevilla defender.

However, Messi, who is keen to see Alves remain in Catalonia has taken matters into his own hands and initiated talks between himself, the club and his friend.

“Leo wants Alves to remain for as long as possible, they have a great connection and he is an important player for the club,” a source told FEN.

“Talks are not developing at the moment but all parties remain calm and focused on winning titles this season.”
