BREAKING: West Ham fined over Sakho AFCON issue

FIFA have fined West Ham United £71,000 for playing striker Diafra Sakho in the FA Cup.

In-form striker Sakho had withdrawn from Senegal’s squad in the Africa Cup of Nations complaining of injury but was instantly involved in the Hammers’ FA Cup win over Bristol City on his return to London, scoring the winning goal.

The Premier League side were then accused of luring the striker back to England and taking advantage of his availability, despite injury and proceedings began as FIFA investigated.

The Hammers were first worried that they would be kicked out of the Cup as a result but football’s governing body opted to issue them with a fine of £71,000 and a reprimand for both club and player.

West Ham will now go on in the competition and face West Brom next week at the Hawthorns for a place in the quarter-finals.
