Spain have crashed out of the World Cup following a 2-0 defeat to Chile, sending shock waves across the World after years of dominance in international football.

Spain started slow against Chile and that allowed Eduardo Vargas to test the quality of Iker Casillas, shooting from distance but his shot went wide of the Real Madrid keeper’s goal.

Xabi Alonso came close for the reigning World champions but his poor effort was saved with ease by Claudio Bravo and that miss would prove costly just minutes later when Vargas opened the scoring with a superb finish.

The lively Alexis Sanchez was causing big problems for Spain’s defence and he hit a fierce free-kick towards Casillas with minutes left to play, leading to Aranguiz to tap home rebound after Spain’s number one fumbled the ball.

Spain did pick themselves up in the second half but a glorious chance for the World champions perhaps fell to the wrong person as Sergio Busquets missed from the closest of margins.

Del Bosque’s side pushed and pushed for a goal and Santi Cazorla tested Claudio Bravo but the Real Sociedad keeper was equal to his effort and saved well.

Chile held on and caused a famous upset as the World champions went crashing out.
