Former Man United backs Chelsea striker over stamp

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes that it is impossible to know if Diego Costa meant his stamp on Liverpool’s Emre Can.

The Brazilian-born Spanish striker Costa has appealed a charge of violent conduct in relation to the incident which occurred during the League Cup semi-final second leg on Tuesday night.

If the former Atletico Madrid star is now set for a three-match ban which will begin with him missing Saturday’s crunch clash with Manchester City in the Premier League.

However, Neville believes that the ban will be overturned as it is impossible to prove Costa meant his stamp.

“My personal view is that Costa in a process should get off his charge,” Neville tweeted. “Impossible to prove he meant it and he doesn’t look at the player.”

Costa has scored 17 goals in 19 Premier League games this season.
