Player Ratings: Chelsea’s 5/10 striker to face action over stamps

Diego Costa was rated 5/10 for his performance against Liverpool in the League Cup on Tuesday night after appearing to stamp on two opposition players.

Chelsea player ratings:

Thibaut Courtois : 8/10

The Player of the semi-final, over both legs. The former Atletico Madrid keeper made important saves at Anfield last week and denied both Moreno and Coutinho tonight.

Filipe Luis : 6/10

Defensively sound but a shadow of the player he was for Atletico Madrid last season.

Kurt Zouma : 5/10

Still developing but nowhere near the same level as Gary Cahill. Read the game wrong on a number of occasions and will be punished against better opposition.

John Terry : 6/10

Again, defensively sound and did not allow Sterling the chance to test Courtois on too many occasions.

Branislav Ivanovic : 7/10

An unlikely hero for Chelsea but Ivanovic has proved time and time again that he gets the job done.

Nemanja Matic : 6/10

A laboured couple of games for Matic, who found it hard to keep the Liverpool midfield at bay. He needs to improve more in that sense to be classed in the same breath as players like Sergio Busquets and Xabi Alonso.

Cesc Fabregas : 6/10

Fabregas had a quiet two-legs and was forced off after colliding with John Terry in the second.

Eden Hazard : 8/10

The Belgian playmaker was a constant problem for Liverpool and gave Chelsea the energy they needed to progress.

Willian : 6/10

A silent figure on the pitch for Chelsea largely, but he did everything asked of him.

Oscar : 7/10

Playing around and just off Costa, the Brazilian struggled to force himself upon Mignolet’s goal in either leg.

Diego Costa : 5/10

Two stamps which are likely to see the Spanish international receive some sort of punishment. Caused problems for the Liverpool back-line.

Liverpool player ratings:

Simon Mignolet : 8/10

Mignolet has faced plenty of stick this season but his performances in the two legs have been brilliant, overall.

Mamadou Sakho : 5/10

Not the best performance from the Frenchman, having gifted Chelsea two chances just before being hauled off after half-time.

Alberto Moreno : 6/10

A regular starter surely for Brendan Rodgers. Moreno is key to their play down the left hand side and tested Courtois.

Emre Can : 6/10

Read the game well and tidied up nicely for Liverpool. Involved in an altercation with Costa.

Martin Skrtel : 6/10

Another involved with Costa but he showed good reading of the game and was defensively sound throughout.

Phillipe Coutinho : 8/10

The Brazilian was Liverpool’s main threat and created chance after chance for the likes of Markovic, Sterling and substitute Mario Balotelli to thrive on.

Steven Gerrard : 6/10

Liverpool’s captain barely imposed himself on the game and got involved with Costa.

Lucas Leiva : 6/10

Steady, sound and screened the defence well.

Jordan Henderson : 7/10

He, Coutinho and Sterling work well going forward but the absence of Daniel Sturridge makes their work look pointless.

Lazar Markovic : 6/10

Not a bad performance but largely in-affective.

Raheem Sterling : 8/10

Another superb performance but his final ball is sometime erratic to say the least. Lots of promising moves and dribbles though.
