Opening fixtures ‘favour United boss’

The early set of Premier League fixtures suits new Manchester United head coach Louis van Gaal, according to former Red Devils striker Michael Owen.

Swansea City visit Old Trafford on the opening day of the 2014-15 campaign on August 16, followed by trips to Sunderland and newly-promoted Burnley later in the month.

Another side to have escaped from the Championship, Queens Park Rangers, are the visitors on September 13 prior to the journey to fellow top-flight new boys Leicester City and a home clash with West Ham United.

The initial run of games are in stark contrast to last term’s opening weeks, when United faced Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United before the end of September.

Ex-England international Owen thinks it gives van Gaal a crucial bedding-in period while he adjusts to the demands of managing in the Premier League for the first time in his decorated career.

The Dutchman will officially take the helm when Holland’s World Cup campaign in Brazil comes to an end.

Owen said on Twitter: “Fixtures are out. Excited for next year’s Premier League already. Nice opening set of fixtures for van Gaal.”

Football pundit Owen spent three injury-hit years at United before a final season with Stoke City, after which he retired from playing.
