Algeria came from behind to beat 3-1 win over South Africa in their Africa Cup of Nations opening tie this evening.

The two teams started the game in poor form, failing to create any clear cut chances but the lively Yacine Brahimi sent his effort goalwards, only to be denied by Darren Keet.

Midway through the first half Dean Furman came close to scoring for South Africa but his powerful effort from outside the box hit the woodwork.

Aissa Mandi then caught Algeria slacking at the back, but he sent his viscous volley over the bar.

The game ended 0-0 at half-time but the second half would see four goals shape the tie.

Six minutes into the second half, Sibusiso Vilakazi found Thuso Phala, who slotted the ball home to give the South Africans a surprise lead.

And, they could have made it 2-0 but Tokelo Rantie sent his penalty kick onto the crossbar moments later.

Thulani Hlatshwayo then made the South Africans pay as he headed a Brahimi cross into the back of the net.

It got worse for Bafana Bafana five minutes later when Faouzi Ghoulam drove into the box from the left, before giving Algeria the lead.

And, the win was rounded off by Islam Slimani to ensure the Desert Warriors in their AFCON campaign.
