Senegal beat Ghana in their African Cup of Nations opener thanks to a late Moussa Sow winner.

The game came alive within 10 minutes as Marseille winger Andre Ayew took matters into his own hands by scoring a well taken penalty after Christian Atsu had been fouled in the area by Bouna Coundoul.

Senegal came close to equalising moments later through Papy Mison Djilobodji but he could not direct his head goalwards.

Cheikhou Kouyate would also come close but his effort was thwarted by Brimah Razak.

The chances continued to fall to Senegal through the first half but it was the lively Atsu who should have extended Ghana’s lead when he was put through on goal, only to send his shot just wide.

Kara Mbodji would then come close for Senegal but the more they attacked Ghana’s goal, the more their chances became less than clear cut.

However, following the break, Stoke City striker Biram Diouf would level the game after beating Razak with a second close range header.

Both sides then played out a thrilling end-to-end tie with Ayew coming close once more, before Dame N’Doye came close for Senegal.

Moussa Sow’s introduction off the substitutes bench late on then saw the game turn in favour of the Senegalese as they scored a dramatic last minute winner through Sow, who was played in by Diouf.
