Liverpool make moves to sign Alvaro Arbeloa

Liverpool are set to make a January move for Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa.

The Spanish full-back has found playing time hard to come by with the European champions this season after the impressive form of Daniel Carvajal and has been heavily criticised in recent days after a woeful performance against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey last week.

Arbeloa, who joined Madrid from Liverpool in 2009 for £5m, is now expected to turn down the advances of Arsenal and Chelsea in favour of a return to Merseyside.

His wishes have also given food for thought to Liverpool fans, who have been buoyed by the news that Rafael Benitez may be set to return to the club after claiming he will leave Italian side Napoli in June.

Arbeloa has played over 200 games for the Spanish side, winning the Champions League last season.
