Ballon d’Or Review: Cristiano Ronaldo scoops top prize

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the 2014 Ballon d’Or winner, beating both Manuel Neuer and Lionel Messi to the award.

The Real Madrid forward complete his year of 2014, having won the Copa del Rey and the Champions League with club side Real Madrid, whilst he steered his country to World Cup qualification in the summer.

Ronaldo beat off both World Cup winning keeper Manuel Neuer and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, four time winner of the award.

The FIFPro Team of the Year also included all three of the nominees, with Neuer in goal; David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Sergio Ramos and Phillip Lahm in defence; Andres Iniesta, Angel di Maria and Toni Kroos in midfield, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo Messi and Arjen Robben in a front three.

The FIFA World Coach of the Year was played out between Carlo Ancelotti, Joachim Low and Diego Simeone, which saw German national coach Low win after sealing the World Cup with his country in the summer of 2014.

FIFA then awarded the Fair Play award to all of the volunteers involved with football that helped in tournaments such as the World Cup and World Club Cup last year.

Goal of the Year was handed out by Christian Karembeu and it went to James Rodriguez, beating Stephanie Roche and Robin van Persie.
