Zidane wanted Gerrard to join Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid midfielder Zinedine Zidane has revealed that the Spanish club were desperate to sign Steven Gerrard in 2004.

The Liverpool midfielder has recently announced his decision to call time on his career at the Merseyside club, bringing an end to a 17-year senior career with the club.

The former England captain came close to leaving the club in 2005 when Premier League rivals Chelsea made a lucrative offer, but he chose to remain at Anfield.

However, claims from former Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane state that the Spanish club failed at the final hurdle to complete a move in 2004 for the midfielder.

“I have said in the past that at his peak he was the best in the world,” said the 42-year-old.

“I think it was the summer of 2004 I was having a conversation with Florentino (Perez) and I told him I wanted him to partner me in midfield for Madrid.

“I know the club tried twice but he wouldn’t leave Liverpool. Not many players turn down Real Madrid but I think that tells you a lot about the loyalty of the man.”
