Barcelona full-back rejects Liverpool for Serie A move

Barcelona defender Martin Montoya has rejected the chance to join Liverpool in January and instead looked to join Juventus.

The young Spanish full-back has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona, with Dani Alves, Adriano and new signing Douglas all being preferred in the right back position.

The 23-year-old has now been told that he is surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou and that he can search for a new club in the coming January transfer window.

Montoya has four years remaining on his current contract with Barca and has gained interest from a number of clubs, including Premier League side Liverpool.

However, the youngster has instructed his agent to reject a move to Anfield and push through a move to Italian side Juventus.

Juan Carrasco told Calciomercato: “Yes, Martin has decided to leave Barcelona.

“There is no rook for him and he is at an important stage in his career, he wants to be happy and play football. It is not easy to leave Barcelona after 15 years, a life at the club.

“Montoya will leave in January, Juventus are a great club and one that Martin admires. I have not contacted them yet but he is keen.”

Montoya, who has come through the youth system at Barca and made 38 first-team appearances.
