Liverpool battle Roma for £4m Uruguayan defender

Liverpool and Roma are set to do battle over the signing of Benfica defender Maxi Pereira.

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is desperate to bring in the experienced right back as a replacement for Glen Johnson, who is set to leave Portuguese club Benfica next summer on a free transfer.

Italian club Roma are also interested in a cut price move in January after being told by Benfica that the defender would be available for £4m.

Liverpool are also considering a move for Barcelona’s Martin Montoya, should their capture of Pereira fail to materialise.

Besiktas and Trabzonspor are also interested in the Uruguayan defender, whilst Montoya has been told by Barca that he can leave in January after failing to move past Dani Alves for a starting place.
