Man United boss Van Gaal hits out at Gary Neville

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has hit back at Gary Neville for comments made on Sky Sports in which he called his former club ‘a pub team’.

Robin van Persie gave United all three points against Southampton on Monday evening, but former defender Neville had harsh words for his former team during his match analysis on Sky Sports, claiming that they resembled a pub side.

However, Dutch boss Van Gaal has rejected the critique and warned him to watch his words in future.

He told reporters: “He can say everything because he’s an ex-legend. But as an ex-legend, you have to know what you’re saying. You can interpret that [as you like]. It’s not difficult when I say he has to pay attention to his words.”

Van Gaal has nicer words for Dutch striker Van Persie after his goals secured a fifth consecutive victory.

“Not only the goals are telling something about Robin van Persie,” he added.

“It think also his [overall] performance – he was one of three players on the pitch for Manchester United who were good or maybe very good.

“He had a great influence on the result so I’m very positive. The second goal was not so easy because the ball is coming for his right foot but he makes it with his left foot. It is a nice touch.”
