Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho has formally handed in a transfer request to leave the Ligue 1 club, following interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

Arsenal’s form this season has seen a number of club members debate on whether or not Arsene Wenger needs to overhaul his squad in the coming January transfer window.

Limited funds will be made available to the French boss, according to our sources, but it is thought that Wenger is keen to spend the majority of that cash on Monaco playmaker Joao Moutinho.

The Portuguese midfielder has been in superb form this season for the Ligue 1 side, but it is understood that Monaco officials are willing to sell him and will now be forced too after he handed in a formal transfer request late on Monday evening.

An asking price of £39.6m has been placed on Moutinho’s head, but that figure has not put Wenger off making a move, with L’Equipe claiming that initial talks have already begun between the two clubs.
