Ched Evans decision is cutting through the Blades

Convicted rapist Ched Evans has been allowed back to train with former club Sheffield United.

Evans, who completed half of his five-year prison sentence for raping a 19-year old woman in North Wales in 2011, has returned to the Blades to rebuild his fitness.

United boss Nigel Clough has insisted that any decision on Evans’ future will be decided by the owners.

A petition with over 150,000 signatures has urged the Blades to not allow the 25-year old to return.

Prior to his conviction, Evans scored 59 goals in 167 for Sheffield United following a £3 Million move from Manchester City in 2009.

Despite his goal-scoring ability, many inside Bramall Lane have reacted angrily to the clubs decision to bring back Evans.

Singers Paul Heaton and Dave Berry, along with TV presenter Charlie Webster and school food and health adviser Lindsay Graham have all left their respective roles as patrons of the club.

Olympic Gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill has also asked the club to remove her name from the stand named after her in protest to Evans’ return.

Deputy Prime Minister and Sheffield MP Nick Clegg has also joined the debate, saying the owners of the club “need to think really long and hard about the fact that when you take a footballer on, you are not taking just a footballer these days, you are also taking on a role model”.
