Wenger discusses Real Madrid defender’s lack of playing time

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has told Raphael Varane that he needs to play more for Real Madrid this season.

The 21-year-old is widely regarded as one of European football’s hottest talents but Arsenal boss Wenger believes he needs to play more for his club side before he can progress at international level and develop.

“If he doesn’t get injured, Varane will be France’s No.1 defender at Euro 2016,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“He is still young, though, and he needs to play regularly at Real Madrid.

“At his age, he still makes mistakes that could cost the team goals.”

Varane, who joined Madrid from Lens in the summer of 2011, has been linked with an exit from the club with Chelsea seemingly interested.

Jose Mourinho is wanting to strengthen his centre-back options and a January move has gained pace after Madrid boss Ancelotti told the West London club that they can sign the defender for £19m.

A move is now expected as Varane is seen as the perfect replacement for John Terry, who is ageing towards retirement.
