Man United flop Moyes compares himself to Mourinho

New Real Sociedad coach David Moyes has claimed he is more like Jose Mourinho than Pep Guardiola in his first press conference at the Basque club.

The Scottish boss was selected over former West Bromwich Albion and Real Betis boss Pepe Mel to succeed Jagoba Arrasate, who was sacked last month following a poor start to the La Liga season.

And, when asked about who is most like in comparison, the former Manchester United and Everton boss claimed he was most like Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

“Probably more Mourinho,” Moyes replied. “I’m tough with players and like to work hard.

“But I’m looking forward to it. I want to take the challenge of getting the team back to the top end of the league.

“I took over a club very similar to this, in Everton, 12 or 13 years ago and we grew. I’m hoping to do the same here and see know reason why I cannot.

The 51-year-old talked about his excitement at the role of being Sociedad boss and said that he is relishing the chance of managing in the what he believes is the best league in the world.

“What convinced me [to join Real Sociedad] was the president [Jokin Aperribay],” Moyes said. “He was fantastically passionate about the club, about how special it was and what it meant to him.

“It was a big ambition of mine to manage abroad. I’m well rested, I have had six months off and I’m raring to go.

“I never had any doubt. I had several offers in the Premier League, but the only place that tugged at the heart strings was Sociedad. Coming here gives me the opportunity to manage in La Liga, which I consider the best league in the world.

“This is a big challenge, an opportunity to show that British managers can manage abroad. I’m always beating the drum about British managers managing abroad, so hopefully I’m the first of many. Hopefully it will make it a lot easier for others to do so as well in the future.”
