Scholes expected Man United to be better

Paul Scholes has criticised Louis van Gaal for failing to turn the form of Manchester United sooner.

The former midfielder was quick to praise United’s decision to appoint the Dutch coach this summer but has revealed that he expected the club to return to form sooner than this point in the season.

Van Gaal is currently four points worse off after 10 games than former boss David Moyes, but his tenure at the club has been met with optimisim thus far.

In a column for the London Evening Standard, he wrote: “Louis van Gaal talks about progress. Well, I expected Manchester United to have a better record by this stage of the season.

“It is difficult to figure out what Van Gaal is thinking during games. His demeanour doesn’t change throughout. He looks a bit subdued. Certainly he appears very different to the man you saw on the touchline at the World Cup finals.

“And the problem in defence should have been addressed in the summer. It was not as if Van Gaal was unaware that Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans were susceptible to injuries.”
