Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal could be set to axe Robin van Persie for the weekend tie with Crystal Palace.

Numerous reports across English press claim that Van Persie’s position in the United starting eleven is now under threat after young striker James Wilson showed promise on the training field.

United boss Van Gaal is considering starting Wilson in the weekend fixture with Crystal Palace on Saturday as he looks to improve on United’s lack of goals this season.

Dutch national captain Van Persie has scored just three goals this season and is far from his best form, having received criticism from both the club’s fans and media.

Van Gaal remains impressed with 18-year-old Wilson and is keen to give the youngster a chance and he spoke of his recent appearances for the first team recently.

“It’s an important time for me,” said Wilson. “Obviously with those two going – Chicha on loan and Danny getting a move to Arsenal – it’s given me a great opportunity. It’s going to be really important for me to get the minutes on the pitch.

“Obviously with the competition in training and even in the games as well, if I can just get a few minutes here and there, then hopefully I can get my chance further down the line.”
