Man United ready to pounce on Real Madrid defender

Manchester United are ready to make a bid for Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao after he was made available for transfer.

The Portuguese defender has struggled to find regular playing time this season after losing his place to youngster Daniel Carvajal and is now ready to leave the club after being made available for transfer ahead of the January transfer market.

The Premier League club did strengthen in their full-back areas this summer but boss Louis van Gaal is uncertain about the experience, fitness and quality of Luke Shaw, signed from Southampton in the summer.

Coentrao, who joined Madrid in 2011 has made just three appearances for the European champions this season.

He has won the Champions League, Copa del Rey, La Liga and SuperCopa de Espana with the club.
