Liverpool beaten by sole Benzema goal in Madrid

Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game as Real Madrid beat a spirited Liverpool side 1-0 at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The reigning European champions have been in superb form of late and they mustered their first chance on goal in the opening three minutes through James Rodriguez, who produced a fine save out of Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool did well to then restrict the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema from having many clear cut chances as they saw most of the ball in the opening 10 minutes.

However, a poor touch from Martin Skrtel allowed Benzema to nip in and find Ronaldo, who again produced a fine save from the Liverpool keeper.

In the 27th minute, the home side eventually broke the deadlock when Benzema beat Kolo Toure to the ball and fired into the back of the net.

Madrid came out in superb form in the second half but the likes of Mignolet, Alberto Moreno and Kolo Toure did well to stop the Spanish side from taking a 2-0 lead.

Although Liverpool applied some late pressure, Real held on to pick up their fourth win in as many games.
