Spaniard downs lacklustre Liverpool

Newcastle United beat Liverpool in Saturday’s lunchtime kick off thanks to a second half goal from Ayoze Perez.

The home side started the game well and could have been awarded a penalty as early as the 10th minute when Moussa Sissoko was hauled down inside the box by Joe Allen, but the referee waved play on, much to the annoyance of Alan Pardew.

Papiss Cisse would then test the palms of Simon Mignolet as he sent a good effort towards the Liverpool goal and the striker would have another chance moments later when he hit a free-lick, but his effort curled over the crossbar.

Mario Balotelli unleashed a free-kick for the visitors midway through the half, but Tim Krul was equal to the Italian.

The second half was slightly more improved compared to the first half as both sides pushed on for an opening goal.

Raheem Sterling tried to force the issue, playing in Italian striker Fabio Borini, but the he failed to capitalize and the chance vanished.

The home side did open the scoring through Spanish striker Ayoze Perez, fresh off the back his award winning night in Spain at the LFP Awards night.

He pounced after Alberto Moreno failed to block Paul Dummett’s cross and gave the home side the lead.

The Bagpies nearly added a second as Perez was involved once more but Remy Cabella was unable to beat Mignolet.

Balotelli had a late chance but the Merseyside club returned to Anfield with no points and just three shots on goal.
