Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a 100k-per-week deal to join Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The Belgian defender joined Arsenal in 2009 from Ajax and started life in the Premier League well, quickly earning a reputation and the plaudits for fans and media close to the North London club, but a string of injuries and poor form has seen him struggle to make the starting eleven in the last 18 months.

And, a summer move was heavily touted with the likes of Inter Milan, Barcelona and Manchester City all credited with interest.

But, following negotiations with the Belgian defender, Man United are now set to be in pole position to sign the centre back and will negotiate a fee with Arsenal.

Vermaelen is currently entering his final year at Arsenal and it is thought that the club are keen to sell, rather than allow him to leave for free next summer, much like Bacary Sagna has recently done, joining Man City.
