Netherlands defender Paul Verhaegh has discussed his relationship with Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

The 31-year-old defender came out of nowhere to be given a surprise selection at the World Cup this summer, having impressed at club level for German club Augsburg.

And, speaking to Goal, the central defender has discussed the characteristics that make Van Gaal one of the best and most talked about coaches in the modern game.

“I had some months with Louis van Gaal. He is a great manager, no doubt about that – just look at his success,” he said.

“I had the luck to see him from another perspective. He is very polite, relaxed, gentle. He is not only interested in the footballer, but in the person itself and your family.

“He has a very strict plan on how he wants to work and what he expects from his players. He expects a lot, but if you bring it, you will have your chance. Just like me in Brazil. He rewarded me for my training performances.”
