Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has discussed Theo Walcott’s return from injury but admitted the winger still lacks match practice.
The England international has been unavailable for his club since injuring his cruciate ligament injury in an FA Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur back in January, but made his comeback against Blackburn in an U21 match last week.
Walcott also featured on the bench for Arsenal against Sunderland on Saturday, but boss Wenger believes he still needs time to re-gain full fitness.
“He is fit but lacks competition,” the Gunners boss told reporters. “Physically, he lacks contact in games and competition. Fitness-wise, there are no problems at all.”
Wenger then said that he was happy with the win over Sunderland.
“We wanted the three points and got them,” he continued. “We were quite in control and were focused. We missed some opportunities but, overall, I am very happy.
“Sunderland was focused to defend very well after last week. Alexis took advantage of the mistakes they made. He has superb quality and speed; that’s why he wins so many balls.”
