Switzerland left it late to beat Ecuador but did so in dramatic fashion as Haris Seferovic scored in the final seconds.

Despite being favourite for the win, the Swiss failed to convert two early chances as Xherdan Shaqiri and Ricardo Rodriguez were kept out by the impressive Alexander Dominguez.

And, those missed chances served as a purpose for Ecuador, who took the lead through Enner Valencia after he was picked out by Walter Ayovi’s cross.

The Swiss then bounced back as they pushed for an equaliser but it did not come until coach Ottmar Hitzfeld hauled on Admir Mehmedi at half-time and the midfielder scored with his first touch of the game.

Both teams then pushed for a winner with Ecuador winger Jefferson Montero coming close as he posed a constant threat to the Swiss defence.

Josip Drmic was then wrongly adjudged to have strayed offside and his goal was ruled out by the referee.

As the game headed into the dying minutes, the South American side nearly grabbed a winner if it wasn’t for Valon Behrami’s last ditch tackle.

And, straight from the counter attack, Rodriguez picked out Real Sociedad forward Haris Seferovic, who netted and sent the European side into the celebration.
