Arsenal forward Joel Campbell produced a superb performance to help Costa Rica pull off a shock win over Uruguay on Saturday evening.

The game began with both sides starting well but it would be the South Americans who started better with Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin putting the ball into the net. However, his finish was ruled offside and the score remained at 0-0.

Moments later and Paris Saint Germain forward Edinson Cavani would come close, sending his shot just wide following good work from Diego Forlan.

Uruguay then broke the deadlock when Diego Lugano was dragged down in the penalty box and Cavani stepped up to put his country ahead.

However, the goal would change the game in favour of Costa Rica, who came out in the second half in a buoyant mood.

Arsenal’s Joel Campbell struck past Fernando Muslera following a dangerous cross from Cristian Gamboa.

Two minutes later and Oscar Duarte would make it 2-1 to the Concacaf side, sending his diving head into the roof of the net.

Marco Urena would then put the tie beyond doubt as he was played in by Campbell, before rolling the ball into the net.

Maxi Pereira would be sent off in the final minutes for Uruguay, to round off a bad night for the South American side.
