Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first sports star to reach 100 million fans on Facebook

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first athlete to reach 100million likes on Facebook.

The 29-year-old Portuguese forward has had an exceptional start to the new season, scoring 13 goals in his six La Liga games.

On Tuesday night, he once again was the hero for his national side when he scored the winning goal deep into stoppage time as Portugal beat Denmark 1-0 in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

His off-field popularity is showing no sign of slowing down after becoming only the second person to reach 100million followers, with only Shakira previously hitting the nine figure mark.

“I’m so honoured to have reached 100million likes on Facebook”, said Ronaldo in a statement.

“It’s amazing to achieve this incredible milestone and connecting with all the fans around the world. Their outstanding support inspires me and I thank them all.”

Ranking with the second most likes among athletes on Facebook, is Ronaldo’s greatest rival Lionel Messi. The Barcelona forward comes in at some 20 million LESS than Ronaldo.

The former Manchester United man, is also the most followed footballer on twitter, with over 30million followers. Brazilian Kaka is the second most popular on Twitter with some 10million less.
