Roy Hodgson has confirmed the starting line-up for England’s opening World Cup game against Italy on Saturday night, which features Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling.

Fans and media men had called for the young Liverpool winger to be included in the startling line-up to face Italy and they have got their wish after England boss Hodgson confirmed his selection choices.

The starting line-up is as follows:

Joe Hart; Glen Johnson, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines; Steven Gerrard; Jordan Henderson; Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling, Wayne Rooney; Daniel Sturridge

Keeper Joe Hart keeps his place in goal and will be protected by a back-four of Glen Johnson, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines.

Steven Gerrard will captain the side and be partnered in midfield by Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson, leaving Sterling and Danny Welbeck on either flank.

Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge will play up front.
