Messi to be handed La Liga award at Bernabeu

Javier Tebas says the LFP will pay tribute to Lionel Messi even if it means he is awarded the La Liga all-time scorer away at Santiago Bernabeu at Real Madrid.

The Argentine international is just two goals away from beating Telmo Zarra’s record of 251 Spanish league goals and he could make history against Eibar next weekend at the Camp Nou.

However, should Messi score just one against the newly promoted La Liga side, he could be set to beat that record against Real Madrid the following weekend on October 25.

And, when asked if he would receive the award and be recognised for it at the Bernabeu, Javier Tebas replied: “Why not?

“I am thinking of ideas but the homage has to be a tribute that lasts forever. We must never forget it in La Liga, it should always stay with us.

“If the time comes and he beats the record we will have to reflect upon it because it will be an historic moment.”
