The FBI looked into death threats made against Malcolm Glazer, the late owner of Manchester United, at the time he purchasing the English club.
Glazer and his family faced numerous death threats from fans who were opposed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ takeover bid in 2005.
The purchase went through for an astonishing £872m, but most of the money came from further bank loans and lending.
On 12 May 2005, Glazer became the main shareholder, a man with a British accent rang the late owner and issued a death threat, according to a report by the FBI.
Several hours later and another call was received, with a man saying he was a member of the Manchester United Action Group and warned the family not to take over the club.
According the the FBI, another call came the following day, with the man saying: “Do you remember me? I am giving you another warning.”
The FBI issued subpoenas as part of the investigation but the records show that the case was closed due to them not being able to identify the caller.
