Liverpool defender set to leave after contract talks break down

Glen Johnson could leave Liverpool on a free transfer after seeing further contract talks break down over the weekend.

The 30-year-old will become a free agent next summer and is able to sign for a new club from January 1sr, 2015, having thus far failed to negotiate a new contract with the Merseyside club.

Johnson has been offered a 12-month extension to his current £120,000 per week deal but the England international is holding out for pay rise and a longer deal.

Team-mate Daniel Sturridge signed a new deal last week, extending his current contract to five years, whilst negotiations to keep Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson at the club continue to gain momentum.

One problem stopping the Anfield based club from a longer deal for Johnson is the improved form of Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno, who have been stand out performers this season.

Johnson spoke to reporters last week about a new deal and remained calm on the situation: “I am just concentrating week by week and not thinking about it. Of course I want to stay but, like I say, I worry about this week, this week, and then next week, next week. That is how I live my life.”
