Pique rubbishes Man United links

Gerard Pique has dismissed rumours of a possible return to Manchester United, stating that he would love to spend the remainder of his career with Barcelona.

The Spanish defender has found playing time hard to come by this season under new boss Luis Enrique but did start the weekend win over Rayo Vallecano, providing a partnership with Marc Bartra.

And, links to his former club Man United have since followed with reports in Spain and England claiming that Pique would welcome a move back to Old Trafford where he spent a season on loan during his younger years.

The 27-year-old has rubbished those claims though by saying he has no plans to leave the Catalan club.

“I love this club for its history, its style of play and its connection to Catalunya,” he told FourFourTwo.

“I love it here. I am at the best club in the world right now. I have no intention of leaving now or later. I’ve just signed a new contract and I want to retire a Blaugrana, just like [Carles] Puyol did.

“You never know what the future holds, but right now, I love this city, I love the people in the club, and most importantly, I love the institution. I don’t see myself leaving.”

Pique was then drawn on team-mate Xavi Hernandez and comparisons between the Spanish midfielder and Paul Scholes.

“You cannot make me choose between them!” he said. “You could say Xavi because of international titles, but the two of them are technically amazing.”
