Manchester United will offer Michael Carrick a new contract keeping the midfielder at the club until 2016, according to The Express.

The midfielder’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season but manager Louis Van Gaal wants to keep Carrick and believes he can still offer a lot more to the team and also wants him to help the development of new signing Daley Blind.

The 33-year-old has not featured for the Red Devils this season after suffering from ligament damage in July but has begun light training at Carrington and is due to return after the international break.

Carrick has reportedly begun deep talks with United over a possible extension and a deal could be completed by the end of next week.

Speaking to the club’s website, Van Gaal said: “[Carrick] is, of course, injured but he is coming back from a heavy injury and he has trained the last two days on a lower level with the second team.

“So that is [designed] to make the step easier for him to come back to play in a match because a player who is coming back from a heavy injury also has a little bit of fear to play with resistance.

“So that is why we let him train with the second team for the last two days. I think, after the international break, he can maybe play some minutes but we have to wait and see. He is doing well, better than we had expected.”
