Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana claims that he and his team-mates are not underestimating Basel ahead of their Champions League group encounter in Switzerland.

The home side were thumped by Real Madrid on match-day one of the Champions League at the Santiago Bernabeu, leading to notions from Liverpool fans and media men that a result for Brendan Rodgers’ side on Tuesday night would be easier to come by.

But, Lallana believes that his side cannot take the Swiss side lightly and that they are treating the tie with as much seriousness as any other.

“You can’t underestimate any team. You have to take them all on merit. We know Real Madrid have some exceptional players and I heard in that game Basel had a few chances as well, so it could have been different,” he told the club’s official website.

“We feel that if we concentrate on ourselves and put in a good performance, keep progressing and getting better, like we feel we have been doing, then we can get the right result.

“Basel had a good run in the competition last year and did well against English opposition, so it’s going to be a tough night for us.”
