Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney needs to be ‘more responsible’ now that he is captain of the Premier League side.
England striker Rooney was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Hammers winger Stewart Downing during the 2-1 win over Sam Allardyce’s side and will serve a suspension, missing the club’s next three matches against Everton, West Brom and Chelsea..
And, the former Everton man has apologised to the club’s fans for his outburst, insisting that the referee’s decision was fair.
But, former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp has claimed that the England international needs to be more responsible on the field.
“I have done plenty of stupid things on a football field but it was rash, particularly after such a good first half,” Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail. “Now Rooney misses three matches including a big clash against Chelsea. With competition so fierce, he will hate being out of the team.
“That edge has always been a big part of Wayne’s game. It’s part of what makes him a winner and you don’t want to take that away but he needs to show greater responsibility, especially as captain.”
