Wenger: Southampton could have won Premier League

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has discussed how Southampton could have won the Premier League title if they had kept hold of their most talented young players over the years.

In recent years, the likes of Gareth Bale, Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana have left Southampton, whilst Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has snatched the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott and Calum Chambers, who have all performed for at the highest level.

And, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who will manage his side against Ronald Koeman’s side in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night; has said that the Southern England club could have won the league if they had not sold their prized assets.

“I think if you look at the talents they have sold over the years, they could have been contenders to win the Premier League because they lost Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Bale plus all the players they lost last season, plus all the players they still have,” Wenger told reporters.

“They have done a fantastic job at Southampton, they deserve a lot of credit.

“They are miracle-workers at Southampton and you must say everybody expected them to collapse, they lost the spine of their team, they lost their manager and they bounced back in a such a way.”
