Meulensteen: Van Gaal does not rate Man United left-back

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has said that Louis van Gaal does not rate Luke Shaw.

Dutch boss Van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford this summer shortly after Shaw had made his move from Southampton to United in a £30m deal, but the England international has been struggling to maintain his fitness and has somewhat lost his place to another new signing – Marcos Rojo.

Rojo, who featured for Argentina in the World Cup final this summer, is unlikely to be displaced by Shaw with Van Gaal keen on the former Benfica man.

And, former Fulham boss and United coach Meulensteen believes that Van Gaal is struggling to accommodate Shaw at the club.

When questionned on Van Gaal’s thoughts on Shaw, Meulensteen told talkSPORT: “Yes. It’s a big surprise for me.

“He would have been informed by the club that they were putting this bid in for Shaw because he’s an up and coming player.

“He’s got a good left foot and a lot of pace. He’s got a lot to learn to get to a Man United level though. He’s a great prospect but he’s brought Rojo in, which is bad news for Shaw.”
