Football Express News understands that Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a deal to move from Arsenal to Manchester United.

The Belgian defender struggled to force his way back into Arsene Wenger’s first team plans at Arsenal last season following some niggling injury problems, which saw duo Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker form a good partnership.

And, with the former Ajax defender set to see his contact expire next summer, it is now understood that he has agreed in principle a move to Premier League rivals.

Vermaelen will follow Bacary Sagna out of the Emirates this summer after the French full-back decided to join Manchester City on a free transfer earlier this week, following the likes of Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure and Gael Clichy, who have all made moves to the Etihad stadium.

The 28-year-old defender joined Arsenal in 2009 and quickly established himself as a first team player and captain of the North London club.
