Wenger wants new signing to follow Henry’s footsteps

Arsene Wenger believes new signing Danny Welbeck can become a similar figure as Thierry Henry at Arsenal after netting against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The former Manchester United striker finally got off the mark against Villa in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory at Villa Park and also played an important part in setting up Mesut Ozil.

And, he has received high praise from Arsene Wenger following his performance, with the Frenchman keen to compare him to former Gunners star – Thierry Henry.

Henry set the world alight at Arsenal, becoming their record goalscorer before he left for Barcelona, with whom he won the Champions League.

And, Wenger believed that Welbeck can have a similar impact at the Emirates stadium.

“Thierry is a good act to follow,” Wenger said.

“I think Danny has an interesting potential and let’s see how he develops.

“He has a good mentality, good physical potential, technical potential, he contributes to our team play because he doesn’t lose the ball up front and those are important qualities.

“He rushed a bit his finishing until now because he didn’t score. It is more a nervous problem maybe because in training he scores goals like a real striker. He is a good finisher.”
