Arsenal set to battle for Swiss defender

Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund look set to take their on pitch rivalry into the transfer market as they both look to sign FC Basel defender Fabian Schar.

The 22-year-old central defender has also attracted interest from Italy as Inter Milan look to snatch a player who impressed with the Swiss national team at this summers World Cup.

The Swiss international has a contract running till 2016 and with Basel wanting to extend that further, it could be time to decide whether Schar sees his future elsewhere.

The Bundesliga and Premier league sides have faced each other in the Champions League Group stages three years running, with Dortmund recently coming out on top with a 2-0 victory in Germany.

Arsenal are looking for cover after suffering injuries to their back four, with right back Mathieu Debuchy ruled out for 6 weeks after with an ankle injury.

2012-13 Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund have struggled for a consistent back line after injuries last season to key defenders Neven Subotić and Mats Hummels, with the latter also being linked to a move to the Premier League next season.
