Man United defender believes Shaw will be ‘best in world’

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has backed team-mate Luke Shaw to become the best left-back in world football.

Former Southampton defender Shaw joined United in a £30m deal this summer but is yet to appear under boss Louis van Gaal, who has bemoaned his poor fitness, whilst also a hamstring injury which he picked up in August.

The England left-back could feature for United against Leicester City this coming weekend but will seemingly have to battle Argentine left-back Marcos Rojo, who impressed in United’s win over QPR on Sunday.

Whilst that remains a doubt, Jonny Evans has discussed both, praising the latter, before claiming that he thinks Shaw will become the best full-back in the world.

He told United Review: “I had the chance to work with Luke in pre-season and there is no doubt he is going to be the best left-back in the world.

“I watched Marcos [Rojo] at the World Cup and thought he was excellent for Argentina whether he played at left-back or left wing-back – and he can play centre-back too.”

Evans then went on to praise Dutch addition Daley Blind, saying: “I watched Daley in the World Cup and he was very impressive. The manager knows him well and he’s come through the Ajax youth system, which is something the manager had a lot of input into so he’ll understand the manager’s way of playing really well.”
