Mourinho explains Diego Costa fitness

Jose Mourinho has spoken following his side’s 1-1 draw with Schalke on Wednesday evening and gave his thoughts on the fitness of striker Diego Costa.

The Brazilian was a substitute in the draw with Bundesliga side Schalke, despite scoring seven Premier League goals in his first four games for the Blues.

Costa, who joined the club from Atletico Madrid this summer struggled with niggling injuries during his time with the Spanish side and his new boss has commented on his inability to play back-to-back games at the moment.

“Diego Costa is not in a condition to play three matches in a week,” the Portuguese told Sky Sports.

“He has problems at this moment. When he plays one game he needs a week to recover to be in condition to play in the next game. We play now in midweek – he can’t do it.

“If he starts [in this game] maybe I have to change him after 25 minutes.”

Mourinho then discussed the game in more depth with reporters, saying he was frustrated with his side for not making it 2-0 through a number of chances, thus, allowing Schalke to level the game and steal a point from Stamford Bridge.

“It was frustrating because we had very good chances to make it 2-0 but we didn’t take them. They fought hard to get a point.”
