Former Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng scored a last minute winner for Bayern Munich to seal all three points against his former club in their opening Champions League Group E match.

The home side almost went ahead after just 30 seconds of play when Thomas Muller was found by Robert Lewandowski, but after rounding Joe Hart – the German international could not steer his effort into the net.

Bayern dominated the opening 10 minutes of the game, but City did manage to get themselves a sniff at goal through Edin Dzeko, forcing Manuel Neuer into a smart save.

Muller would again come close for Bayern as he sent a thumping header towards goal, but England number one Hart was equal to his effort.

Hart was in good form for City all evening, stopping more first half efforts from David Alaba and Lewandowski, before denying young Spaniard Juan Bernat early in the second half.

Jesus Navas would then quickly counter for City, playing in David Silva, who could not force his header goal-wards.

Manuel Pellegrini’s failed to push on from that chance and seemed to hold out for a point, but they failed to defend until the final whistle, allowing former defender Jerome Boateng the chance to strike from 25-yards and seal all three points.
