In a repeat of the World Cup final in 2010, Netherlands and Spain met on Friday night but the scoreline was much different from that four years ago as Louis van Gaal’s side won 5-1.

Spain dominated the game in the opening stages, but the first clear cut chance fell to the Dutch as Wesley Sneijder broke free and fired his shot goal ward but Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas was on hand to stop the midfielder.

Diego Costa then had a chance for Spain as he collected the ball and ran at Rob Vlaar, but he was tackled and the Dutch breathed a sigh of relief.

The Atletico Madrid forward continued to cause a threat and his run into the box caused Stefan de Vrij to foul and concede a penalty, which Xabi Alonso stepped up to fire past Jasper Cillessen.

Spain could have doubled their lead when Andres Iniesta picked out the run of David Silva, but the Manchester City man saw his chipped effort saved by the Dutch keeper.

Robin van Persie would then go down the other end and level the tie, beating the offside trap and headed past Casillas on the stroke of half-time.

The Dutch side came out in the second half seemingly buoyed by their equaliser and they went ahead in the 53rd minute when Arjen Robben collected the ball and beat two defenders before firing past Casillas.

Spain looked in trouble and they went even further ahead when De Vrij headed in from close range, following a quick Dutch counter attack.

Van Persie would then be on hand to make it four as the Dutch exacted revenge on their World Cup 2010 finalists, tapped the ball into an empty net.

The win was then rounded off when Robben beat Casillas to make it five and seal all three points.
